Military orders to demolish 72 commercial shops and houses in East Barta'a

21,January,2003

The village of Barta'a is located to the north of Jenin district in the West Bank. After the war that broke out between the Arab countries and the Jews and the creation of the state of Israel in 1948 the village of Barta'a was divided into two parts East and West because of its location at the border of the green line. West Barta'a is under the Israeli sovereignty and its people are having Israeli ID's , while East Barta'a is in the occupied Palestinian territories of area ''C'' and the people are having Palestinian ID's. See Map 1.

The Israeli Occupation Authorities with the help of the IOF decided to demolish 72 houses and commercial shops in the village of East Barta'a*. The reason for that is the building without permits according to Israeli military orders. In reality, this is not the real reason, because maps for the Separation Wall distributed by the IOF and analyzed by ARIJ researchers shows that this area is supposed to contain a part of the Apartheid Wall in the West Bank that Israel started to construct since June 2002. See Map 2

The president of village council Mr. Ghassan Kabha said to ARIJ field workers that the IOF distributed Military orders stating that the owners should evacuate their houses and shops as a final warning for demolition. The previously mentioned, are located on the Border between East Barta'a and West Barta'a villages, where this last is located behind the 1949 Armistice line . See Tender

Military order of title: ' Final Warning to stop construction and to demolish.

The Area where the IOF intends to demolish is a very active area and even considered as the commercial center of the village as observed by ARIJ field workers. The threatened area is composed of 12 homes, 56 commercial shops, 3 sewing workshops and a lamp factory. The most strange thing is that East Barta'a is going to be included within the Wall and the area to be demolished is far from the Wall..! See Photo 1 & Photo 2

The Village of East Barta'a is going to be annexed to Israel as it falls behind the Separation Wall. The implementation of demolition in the heart area of the village located near the green line will cause a real disaster for the people of Barta'a and will kill its active commercial center. The real reason for this act is the construction of a part of the Separation Wall near the village even though the Wall is not passing through the village center..!
