The Israeli occupation forces demolish two houses in Jericho

Description:

Jericho city witnesses another Israeli violation of the human right of adequate housing.

17 June, Tuesday morning about 7:00 AM , The Israeli occupation forces accompanied by a bulldozer raided Al Matar area east Jericho city, and demolished a house that belongs to “Mohammad Zaloum” , who is the supporter of a family of 7 (1 child), Here are some information about the targeted house:

  • An under construction house, that consists of two floors.
  • A fence about (75 m *1.5 m).
  • An under construction pool 90 m3.
  • A cistern 60 m3.
  • A yard about 250 m2.

The owner commenced the construction of the house late last year, the owner said that he never received a halt of work order , and that the construction was in borders of Jericho municipality.

Also in Thursday, 19 June, The Israeli occupation forces demolished another house that belongs to Shadi Sunuqrot in the same location, Sunuqrot is originally from Jerusalem and he supports a family of 5 (3 children). Reportedly , the targeted house is under construction and consists of one floor (about 160 m2), the occupation authorities claim that it lacks licenses, while the owner got a building permit form Jericho municipality.

Faraj Na’asan , head of the coordination and Liaison office in Jericho governorate told LRC reporter:

“We contacted with the Israelis who claimed that the structures are located in C area, they also claimed that they served halt of work military orders earlier.”

Noteworthy, “Al-Matar” area is located  east Jericho and heavily targeted by the occupation authorities. During the recent years, 7 houses were demolished in the same location , and an irrigation pool , In addition to uprooting tens of palm trees under claims that the area is classified C in Oslo accords. The occupation also considers part of Al-Matar (280 dunums) an Israeli state property.

“Al-Matar” area is about 600 dunums , of which a big part is used in agriculture, and another part is used for building residential apartments.

International Conventions and agreements pertaining to house and residents demolition:

 The Universal Declaration of Human Rights:

Article 17: ” (1) Everyone has the right to own property alone as well as in association with others.

(2) No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his property.”

The 1907 the Hague Convention

 Article 23: ” In addition to the prohibitions provided by special Conventions, it is especially forbidden to destroy or seize the enemy’s property, unless such destruction or seizure be imperatively demanded by the necessities of war.”

The Geneva Fourth convention

Article 53: ”  Any destruction by the Occupying Power of real or personal property belonging individually or collectively to private persons, or to the State, or to other public authorities, or to social or cooperative organizations, is prohibited, except where such destruction is rendered absolutely necessary by military operations.”

The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights:

Article 11.1 states: “The States Parties to the present Covenant recognize the right of everyone to an adequate standard of living for himself and his family, including adequate food, clothing and housing, and to the continuous improvement of living conditions. The States Parties will take appropriate steps to ensure the realization of this right, recognizing to this effect the essential importance of international co-operation based on free consent”.
